Giants have feelings, too: Traditional Literature

Image
"Giants have feelings, too" is by Dr. Alvin Grangowsky. It is on the other side of the book "Jack and the Beanstalk" that I recently wrote about. It is about the Giants perspective. It begins with Jack coming up the beanstalk and eating bread, but when the Giant came he hid in the oven. When the Giant fell asleeo counting his gold Jack took the gold and went all the way down the beanstalk home. When the Giant woke up him and his wife were confused to where the money went, and they believed they misplaced it. A while later Jack came back. He then ate bread and hid in the oven when the giant appeared. The Giant then had his hen lay golden eggs. When he fell asleep Jack stole the hen, and went down the beanstalk. they then knew it had to be Jack taking their things. Jack came back, but this time he snuck in, and did not tell anyone. When he was hiding in the oven the Giant family listened to their gold harp play music. When Jack had the chance he stole the harp, but ...

The Three Billy Goats Gruff: Traditional literature

Image
"The Three Billy Goats Gruff" told by P.C. Asbjornsen is a story about three Billy goats all named Gruff. They are going to the Hillside to get fat. On the way to the hillside they must pass over a bridge that a big troll lives under, so when they get to the bridge the smallest goat begins to go over and the Troll almost eats him. When he almost eats him the goat says to wait for the bigger goat to come. When the second goat comes over the troll does the same thing, but the goat says to wait for the biggest goat to come over. When the third and biggest goat begins to come over the troll attempts to eat him, but the goat has such big horns he tells him NO, and that the goat will get the troll. So the biggest goat attacks the troll, and the three Billy goats go to the hillside and get fat. I would not use this book in my classroom because it is a little violent, and it could give students the wrong idea. But they could use it to teach about bullying, and why they...

"The Hare and the Tortoise": Traditional Literature

Image
The story  "The Hare and the Tortoise" by Maryann Hoberman was inside a book full of fables. The hare told the tortoise that he is slow, so the tortoise challenged the hare to a race. The hare took his time, and even took a nap. The hare ended up sleeping too long while the tortoise slipped past him quietly. When the hare woke up the tortoise was already at the finish line, and he had won the race. I would use this book in my classroom, and I would use it when teaching people about being team players. It could be used in all grade levels to teach a lesson, because everyone would be able to understand it . It could also be used in science when talking about animals, so students know how slow or fast they are.

The Little Ant: Traditional Literature

Image
"The little Ant" retold by Shirleyann Costigan is a folktale from New Mexico. It is a story about an ant who was ready to go home, but a large puddle made it hard for her to go home. She asked the sun to dry up the puddle, but the cloud was in the Sun's way. She asked the cloud to move aside, but the wind was not blowing that day. She asked the wind to blow, but he said not today. So she sang a song that put Wind to sleep, when he was asleep she tickled his nose which made him sneeze. When he sneezed he blew the cloud, so the sun was able to come out. When the sun came out the Ant was able to go home since he dried up the puddles. I would use this in a story about the water cycle. when learning about the earth and how the weather changes it would be a great book to include. It is probably for first or second grade. It is not a hard book and it is very easy to understand.

Jack and the Beanstalk:Traditional Literature

Image
"Jack and the Beanstalk" retold by Dr. Alvin Granowsky is a story of a boy who lives with his mother. They do not have very much money so his mother sends him to sell their cow since she stopped producing milk. Instead of selling the cow for money he traded it for Magic Beans. His mother was mad, so she threw the beans out the window, and the next morning when Jack woke up there was a beanstalk going all the way into the clouds. He went up the beanstalk, and found a house. He went to the house to eat food by a women and she told him to BE CAREFUL, because her husband was a giant. When the giant arrived he ate, then began counting gold coins. After counting he fell asleep, so Jack took the coins, and went down the beanstalk. Him and his mother began to run low on gold, so he did the same thing and went up the beanstalk. When the scary giant got home he had a plate of food and then had a magic hen who laid golden eggs. When the Giant went to sleep Jack came out ...

Image
.           "New kid" is a story about a boy who becomes enrolled in a exclusive private school. He enjoys cartoons and wants to go to art school, but when he arrives at this private school he realizes that he is one of the only children of color. Jordan the new kid is having a hard time to fit in with the other students, so he tries to hide himself with his jacket because he is dealing with racism. Jordan becomes friends with a few students who actually are nice and stand up against the bullies for him. He then gets his notebook taken by a teacher, and she calls him angry and does not think he appreciates going to his private school. by the end of the story Jordan makes his friends comfortable, and he overcomes hiding himself everyday with his Jacket. This book was a great book that could really open the eyes of students who are from wealthier areas about treating children with respect no matter where they come from. This book is a graphic novel and comic....
