New Kid
. "New kid" is a story about a boy who becomes enrolled in a exclusive private school. He enjoys cartoons and wants to go to art school, but when he arrives at this private school he realizes that he is one of the only children of color. Jordan the new kid is having a hard time to fit in with the other students, so he tries to hide himself with his jacket because he is dealing with racism. Jordan becomes friends with a few students who actually are nice and stand up against the bullies for him. He then gets his notebook taken by a teacher, and she calls him angry and does not think he appreciates going to his private school. by the end of the story Jordan makes his friends comfortable, and he overcomes hiding himself everyday with his Jacket. This book was a great book that could really open the eyes of students who are from wealthier areas about treating children with respect no matter where they come from. This book is a graphic novel and comic. Graphic novels are easy to read, and they are also interesting for the students to grab their attention. I would use this book if I was teaching a higher grade such as forth through sixth grade, but since I want to teach a lower grade such as first or second I would not. It would be too advanced for young children to understand. This book is also great, because it has won a John Newberry Medal, and the Coretta Scott King. When planning a lesson for reading this book I would do it during the history lesson when students are learning about diversity, or Black History Month. I want the students to know that we must be accepting of everyone, and how to behave towards people from all different backgrounds
