Teacher Evaluation: This is a great book. It could definitely not be read in elementary school because they will probably not be able to fully comprehend it. When i first read this book, it was in 6th grade, so if I teach 6th grade then I would probably read this book. It also has a movie that you can watch towards the end of the book.
Summary: The Giver is about Jonas a boy who lives in a society that has no war, fear, pain or hate. Each family has two children, and they are born from someone else. The person who births them is a full-time pregnant person. everyone functions as a society with jobs that are assigned to them. Jonas lived with his mother and father. Jonas did not care what job he was going to have. His society is black and white because color represented pain. They get assigned jobs at 12 and Jonas got assigned the Giver. The giver gets memories from the past good and bad. When Jonas begins receiving memories from the past he realizes how boring life is. He realizes no one makes their own decisions. Jonas and the original Giver become very close. Jonas begins taking care of a problem child Gabriel. He begins trying to help Gabriel because they might "release" him. When you get released that means you get killed. So Jonas and the Giver plan to escape the community to go somewhere else. Jonas and Gabriel are forced to leave early because he is going to be killed the next day. They leave and go through heavy snow and cannot bike anymore. He then sees twinkling lights and he believed that someone was waiting for them.
