Teacher evaluation: This book is a very good read that teachers can read to their students, or that students can read if they are old enough. Since I want to teach younger grades I would not be able to read this book to them, because it is too complex. But if I were to teach older grades such as 4-6 I would read this book to my students. It is a longer chapter book, so I would allow my 6th grade students to read it, but elementary students would probably not be able to fully comprehend it. It also has a movie that is based off the same story, so I would allow my students to watch the movie as a fun day once we are finished comprehending the book. I would also have this book relate to science lessons, or I would relate it to equality or inclusivity.
Summary: Auggie a ten year old boy who was born with a facial deformity. He lives in New York City with his mom, dad, sister and their dog. He was sent to a private school, and when he went to meet the principal he noticed that there was one nice boy names Jack and there was another boy named Julian who was sort of mean. He begins school and him and Jack become good friends. There becomes a rumor going around that Auggie has "the plague". On Halloween which is Auggie's favorite holiday he hears a mean thing that his friend Jack says. It ends up being found out that Jack's family does not have much money, so Jack was trying to be friends with Julian the mean kid to fit in. Jack then realizes that Auggie must have heard what he said, so he feels very badly. There is then an overnight trip to a nature reserve, and Auggie's very first time staying somewhere overnight without his parents. That night Auggie takes Jack into the woods so Jack can go to the restroom. When that is happening older boys come and start making fun of Auggie, so boys from Auggie's school come to his rescue. When that happens Auggie becomes super popular after the situation and everyone wants to be his friend. Auggie also wins a reward for Courage and Kindness. He becomes very comfortable and happy with who he is and his place at the school.
