The War That Saved My Life: Historical Fiction

Title: "The War that Saved my Life"

Author: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Genre: Historical Fiction

Awards: Newbery

Age Group: 12- 15

Teacher Evaluation: The book would be great to use in a middle school or early high school classroom, so I would not be able to use it as an EC- 6 Major. But if I were to teach high school I would use this book. It is diverse in what subjects you could use it in because it reflects onto WWII, and it also could be used in an ELA classroom for students to write reflections over.

Summary: Ada is a young girl who has a bad foot. She lives with her mom and brother in London, and WWII is approaching London. Ada's mom abuses Ada and her brother, so Ada and her brother decide to leave London. When they leave London they go to a town called Kent. Kent is a very small town. When they arrive to this small town they meet a women by the name of Susan ,and she pretty much takes in Ada and her brother. Susan gives them everything that they need, but Ada and her brother begin to have disagreements. When they become really bad Ada's Brother Jamie tries to leave, but Ada wants to stay. Ada's brother goes to school and Ada begins to ride Susan's horse. Ada begins to dislike Susan because Susan has not been caring for the horse like she is supposed to. Susan begins to help Ada have some relief in her foot, and she also wants to get her surgery, but Ada's mom will not reply to letters allowing it. Ada then finds out that her mom has moved away. The war is seeming to go into Susan's village so Ada and Jamie plan on going back to london to see their mom, and they insist that Susan goes with them. Susan does not want to go. A bomb then lands on London, and Susan goes looking for the siblings . when Susan goes back to her village she realizes that a bomb landed directly on her home. So she realizes that going and searching for Ada and Jamie saved her life.
